Alongside Chain and Daddy Cool, the valiant Spectrum was one of the first underground bands of the early 70's to gain mainstream acceptance. Spectrum's brand of progressive rock was often built around long, complex musical passages, very much in the vein of UK bands like the post Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, early Soft Machine and Traffic. Yet the band did embrace a commercial aesthetic at times, as its #1 hit single, the compelling 'I'll Be Gone', displayed. I'll Be Gone was released in January 1971, just before their appearance at Myponga.
